Sci Fi TV Premieres this week

Futurama (Hulu): While delivering pizza on New Year’s Eve 1999, Philip J. Fry is accidentally cryonically frozen and thawed out one thousand years into the future. Season 8 premiere on Monday.

Good Omens (Prime Video): A naked archangel turns up at the door to renegade angel Aziraphale’s bookshop, with no memory of who he is or how he got there, and Aziraphale and retired demon Crowley’s lives become extremely complicated. Heaven and Hell are both desperate to find the runaway. As Crowley and Aziraphale attempt to fix a human romance, things become increasingly unsafe for them, in the past and the present. Season 2 Premeires July 27th.

Twisted Metal (Peacock): Twisted Metal is a high-octane action comedy, based on an original take by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick and written by Michael Jonathan Smith, about a motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a badass axe-wielding car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck. Premieres on Thursday.

Harley Quinn (Max): Good and evil are about to get all tangled up together. Season 4 premieres on Thursday.

Also premiering this week are The Hardy Boys Season 3 Wednesday on Hulu and Volume 2 of The Witcher Season 3 on Saturday on Netflix. Wrapping up this week is Disney+’s MCU mini-series Secret Invasion.

Schedule Notes

There are no sci fi TV premieres this week, but next week will make up for that with no less than six shows with new episodes hitting the schedule including Futurama Season 8 (Hulu), Good Omens Season 2 (Prime Video), and Harley Quinn Season 4 (Max).  Wrapping up this week is AMC’s The Walking Dead: Dead City which has its two-hour season finale on Sunday.  That one has been billed as a mini-series, but it could continue into a second season.  Over on The CW on Monday, The Rising wraps up its eight-episode run.  That is an acquisition from Sky in Britain and it has already been cancelled in that country.

Sci Fi/Fantasy TV Shows Premiering This Week

Foundation (Apple TV+): More than a century after the Season 1 finale, tension mounts throughout the galaxy. As the Cleons unravel, a vengeful queen plots to destroy Empire from within. Hari, Gaal, and Salvor discover a colony of Mentalics with special abilities that threaten to alter psychohistory itself. Meanwhile, the Foundation and Empire are on a collision course for war with the fate of humanity in the balance. Season 2 premieres on Friday.

We What Do in the Shadows (FX): This series documents the nightly exploits of vampire roommates Nandor, Laszlo, Nadja, and Colin Robinson as they navigate the modern world of Staten Island with the help of their human familiar, Guillermo, and their vampire bureaucrat acquaintance, The Guide. Season 5 premieres 10 PM EST on Thursday.

Sci Fi/Fantasy TV Shows Premiering This Week

The Witcher (Netflix): Destiny brought them together. Dangerous forces are trying to tear them apart. Geralt and Yennefer fight to keep Ciri safe as war brews on the Continent. The first half of Season 3 will be available for streaming on Thursday.

Schedule Notes:

The second half of Season 3 of The Witcher will be released on July 27th and the show has been renewed for a fourth season.  On Tuesday, Superman & Lois will have its season finale on The CW and that one has been renewed for a fourth year.  Leading out from that, the cancelled Gotham Knights will have its series finale.  On Friday, Silo will have its season finale on Apple TV+ and it has been renewed for a second season.

Sci Fi/Fantasy TV Shows Premiering This Week

Secret Invasion (Disney+): Set in the present-day MCU, Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill, and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity. The first episode will be available for streaming on Wednesday.

Skull Island (Netflix): Shipwrecked in the South Pacific, a group of explorers encounter a menagerie of fearsome creatures — including the giant ape who rules the island: Kong. All episodes will be available for streaming on Thursday.

From has its second season finale on Sunday on MGM+. There has been no word on a third season of that show yet.

Sci Fi/Fantasy TV Shows Premiering This Week

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (Paramount+): Captain Pike, Number One, Spock and the rest of the Enterprise crew are back exploring strange new worlds and boldly going where no one has gone before. Season 2 premieres on Thursday.

Black Mirror (Netflix): The sixth season of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror returns with 5 ground-breaking new stories. The most unpredictable, unclassifiable and unexpected season yet. Premieres Thursday.

The Walking Dead: Dead City (AMC): New walkers, new villains, New York! Maggie forms a lethal alliance with Negan to rescue her kidnapped son. Together they will try to navigate the mean streets of NYC. If they can survive Dead City, they can survive anywhere. Premieres at 9 PM EST on Sunday.

Outlander (Starz): Following the harrowing events of Season 6, Jamie and Young Ian race to rescue Claire before she’s tried and wrongfully convicted for the murder of Malva Christie. But their mission is complicated by the beginning of a geopolitical firestorm: The American Revolution has arrived. Premieres 8 PM EST on Friday.

Schedule Notes:

Fear the Walking Dead has its mid-season finale on Sunday following the premiere of The Walking Dead: Dead City.  That will be a two-and-a-half-hour episode and the final six episodes will likely arrive at some point in Fall 2023.

The British supernatural drama The Rising kicked off last week on The CW and I missed it because it got very little promotion from its network. That show was cancelled after a one-season run on Sky Max, so this is just filler for The CW’s schedule for the Summer. You can watch the first episode on the network’s website or app if you want to catch up. Apart from that, a few other CW shows like Gotham Knights and Nancy Drew have new eps this week along with Fear the Walking Dead on AMC and The Lazarus Project on TNT.

Sci Fi/Fantasy TV Shows Premiering This Week

Manifest (Netflix): As the Death Date looms, the Flight 828 passengers and their loved ones race to fulfill their Callings and prevent the terrifying future that awaits. Season 4B premieres on Friday.

The Lazarus Project (TNT): George is the latest recruit to The Lazarus Project – a secret organization that has harnessed the ability to turn back time whenever the world is at the threat of extinction. George and his colleagues are the few people on Earth with the ability to remember the events that are undone when time goes back. But when a freak accident harms someone close to George, Lazarus won’t let him turn back time to undo it unless there is the threat of global extinction. Now George must choose to stay loyal or go rogue as he faces the question: if you had the power to re-write your past, what would you sacrifice to do it? Premieres Sunday at 9 PM EST.

Nancy Drew (CW): Nancy Drew is a brilliant teenaged detective whose sense of self had come from solving mysteries in her hometown of Horseshoe Bay, Maine – until her mother’s untimely death derails Nancy’s college plans. Season 4 premieres Wednesday at 8 PM EST.

The CW’s The Flash wraps up its nine-year run this week with its series finale on Wednesday.  That will also be the end of the official Arrow-verse shows because Superman & Lois is considered tangential to that franchise, and the proposed Justice U show will not be going forward.  Apart from that, there are not too many genre entries this week as the 2022-23 regular season winds down.  But more sci fi and fantasy shows are on the way and you can see all the premieres for May and beyond at this link.
