There are quite a number of streaming services out there trying to convince us to shell out the money for a subscription, and I tend to cycle through those depending on what sci fi/fantasy shows they currently have available. In this column, I will focus on a different service with each post and let you know what I am finding that might convince sci fi TV fans it is worth the money.

AMC+ is the streaming arm of the AMC networks while Shudder is a subset of that which focuses primarily on horror content.  Most (if not all) of what is available on Shudder is also on AMC+, and the latter service also includes content from AMC, BBC America, IFC, Sundance TV, IFC Films Unlimited, and Sundance Now.  Shudder got its start back in 2016 and it offers mostly acquired films and television shows, though it does have some originals.  AMC+ kicked off in 2020 and offers mostly content from the venues mentioned above as well as a few exclusives.

Shudder’s flagship series is the horror anthology Creepshow which is headed into its fourth season.  The streamer has also offered some originals from international sources such as the French-made Missions (though that has since dropped off), but it has not invested heavily in scripted series at this point.  The majority of the original content from Shudder includes horror movies or documentaries based on the genre and you can see a list of those at this link.  If you are a fan of horror, this is definitely the service for you and the monthly plan starts at $5.99 a month.  But for a little bit more, you can get Shudder plus the AMC+ content.

For three bucks more per month, you get coverage across the AMC networks and from what I can tell that covers everything on Shudder.  That gets you access to all the originals currently airing on the AMC cable channels plus past seasons of many of those as well (in some cases, it is only the current season if the show has an exclusive streaming deal on another venue).  Fans of The Walking Dead will like this service because not only does it cover all of those shows, you can watch episodes a week early from the current season once they have had their premiere.

As far as originals, AMC+ has given us the vampire series Firebite, the sci fi entry Moonhaven, the AI-themed Pantheon, and the upcoming Interview with the Vampire based on the Anne Rice novels.  The service also has the Italian post-apocalyptic entry Anna, and has more originals on the way like the upcoming Mayfair Witches (also from Anne Rice) and the sci fi series Beacon 23 which will star Lena Headey (it is unclear if that will be on AMC or an AMC+ exclusive at this point).  There may not be quite enough content to justify subscribing twelve months out of the year unless you are a TWD fan, but there is more than enough to keep you busy for two or three months.  And Moonhaven is definitely worth a look.

AMC+ is currently priced at $8.99 per month with a free trial week, and you can sign up for a full year for $83.88.  Shudder runs $5.99 per month with a free week, and the annual subscription is $56.99.  I managed to jump on with a special they were running for AMC+ that was six months for 24 bucks.  Keep an eye out for specials like that, because the service is definitely worth that type of money.

NBC’s Peacock streaming service kicked off two years ago but has not made much of a splash in original programming yet.  It did have the high-profile adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World which starred Game of Thrones alum Harry Loyd, but . . . the less said about that misfire the better.  It also has a reboot/revival/sequel of Battlestar: Galactica series in the works, but there have been no updates on that in a while (more about that one at this link).  Other originals that might interest genre fans include The Lost Symbol, Girl in the Woods, and Wolf Like Me along with the upcoming The Undeclared War and Vampire Academy.

Peacock’s strength is its back catalog as it has many past productions put out by the NBCUniversal owned and acquired studios.  It has shows like Battlestar: Galactica (2003), Heroes, Eureka, Quantum Leap, The Greatest American Hero, Sliders, Charmed (1998), Dark Shadows (1966), and even the animated gem Exo-Squad (more on that one at this link).   But several of these are available on other free streaming services out there (Quantum Leap and Sliders are on The Roku Channel, Dark Shadows is on FreeVee), so check around before you sign up for Peacock for one or more past shows.  At some point, I am guessing the shows available to stream for free on NBC.com (Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Amazing Stories, The Six Million Dollar Man, etc.) will be absorbed by Peacock, so that could increase the value of the service.

Peacock offers a free streaming option with ads, though the content is limited.  Some shows are not available and some only have a sampling of episodes.  The Premium plan costs five bucks a month and that includes ads (though they are not too intrusive).  The Premium Plus plan costs ten bucks a month and there are no ads with that.  I have kept Peacock on my regular rotation because I do the annual plan for $55.  But that is mostly for the back catalog including non-genre entries like Cheers.  If there are not enough older shows to interest you, then you may want to sign up for a month or two if there is an original of interest.  It is a pretty affordable service, but your mileage will vary depending on how much of their content you find worthwhile.  You can see what they have available at JustWatch.com.

There are quite a number of streaming services out there trying to convince us to shell out the money for a subscription, and I tend to cycle through those depending on what sci fi/fantasy shows they currently have available. In this column, I will focus on a different service each with each post and let you know what I am finding that might convince sci fi TV fans it is worth the money.

Netflix was one of the first services offering streaming, and it has since become the leader in that realm.  It started off as a DVD rental company, taking away business from brick-and-mortar rental stores and eventually contributing to the downfall of Blockbuster.  As Hulu and Amazon started offering streaming, Netflix jumped onboard as well, adding VOD to its service (initially for free and later for an upcharge).  Originally it had only existing movies and TV shows available to stream, but in 2013 it made the move into producing originals.  Since that time, it has poured enormous amounts of money into its original productions and become a streaming juggernaut.

Among the originals it has offered in the sci fi and fantasy genres over the years are Stranger Things, The Witcher, Black Mirror, the Lost in Space reboot, Shadow and Bone, and it had the MCU shows like Daredevil and Jessica Jones (until they were cancelled and eventually moved to Disney+).  But that just scratches the surface of what Netflix has available as it has expanded to international productions with notable sci fi entries such as Dark, 3%, Rain, and All of Us Are Dead.  Watching all of the Netflix originals released each month would probably be close to a full-time job year-round.

Among the past shows that Netflix has available for streaming are many of the Arrow-verse entries, Supernatural, Dark Matter, Avatar: The Last Air Bender, The 4400, and more.  There was a time when the streamer had a vast catalog of prior genre entries, but as studios have been setting up their own services they have let the streaming rights for their shows lapse at Netflix.  Still, there is a fair amount available from the streamer with quite a number of movies (including originals) as well.

But here’s the rub on Netflix: don’t get attached to any of its originals.  The streamer works on a churn model that is constantly cranking out new originals to draw in subscriptions.  Once a show gets past its first season, though, it tends to deliver diminishing returns on new subscriptions (high-profile entries like Stranger Things and The Witcher are the exceptions).  So Netflix does not have much interest in keeping shows going beyond a third or fourth season because the new subscriptions usually do not justify the cost by that point.  The streamer has also been very quick to cancel shows of late, even ones that have pulled in high viewership (i.e., Jupiter’s Legacy, Away, Cowboy Bebop, Archive 81, and more).  Typically the best you can hope for is a three-to-four-season run (about 24 to 40 eps total) with the final season announced in advance.  But plenty of shows have been cancelled by the streamer without the chance to wrap up their storylines (The OA, The Society, Altered Carbon, and more).

Netflix is also one of the most expensive streaming services, and they are pretty strict on the number of devices from which you can watch the service.  $9.99 gets you one screen without HD, $15.49 gets you two screens with HD, and $19.99 gets you four screens.  You do get plenty of content for your money, but also a fair amount of frustration since the streamer is not good about supporting its own originals.  A new ad-supported tier that will be cheaper is in the works, and that may offer a good way to sample the service and decide if you want to pay the higher price for no ads.  Just understand that Netflix is all about driving new subscribers to its service as fast as possible and it could quickly dispense with any or all of the shows that got you to sign up.

Amazon’s Prime Video is one of the early platforms that offered television and movies for streaming, originally going by the name Unbox then switching to Instant Video before landing on Prime Video (a name linked to its Amazon Prime service).  It has not been nearly as prolific in scripted originals as Netflix, but Prime Video does have some genre entries of note.  The first sci fi series it produced was The Man in the High Castle, and that was a first-rate production that will eventually go down as a genre classic. The service also saved The Expanse after it was cancelled by Syfy, and it produced three additional seasons of that well-received sci fi entry.

Currently, the streamer is getting the most attention from its superhero parody The Boys as well as its big-budget adaptation of the Robert Jordan fantasy novels The Wheel of Time.  Other shows of note include Outer Range, Invincible, Upload, Carnival Row, and Undone.  Arriving soon as part of the Prime Video slate is Paper Girls (July 2022) and The Lord of the Rings prequel series The Rings of Power (September 2022).  Assuming that latter production does not bankrupt them (word is they shelled out a billion dollars for it), I expect more notable genre entries to arrive in coming years.

Among prior shows available to stream, Prime Video used to have a lot to choose from, but since the studios have been moving properties they own to their streaming services, the selection has gone down.  But there are still some notable shows streaming on Prime Video and their free, ad-based service Freevee like Farscape, The X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Lost, Fringe, and more.  There are also quite a number of shows (and movies) that you can purchase VOD from Amazon.  And now that Amazon has bought MGM, expect much of that studio’s back catalog to start hitting the service along with the possibility that a new Stargate series could be in the works.

Prime Video is included with the Amazon Prime service which gives you free shipping with all your orders and a few other perks.  That costs $14.99 per month or $139.99 per year.  If you don’t want the Prime membership, you can subscribe to Prime Video separately which costs $8.99 per month.  I find myself buying less and less from Amazon these days, so I may not re-up my Prime membership when it comes due.  If that is the case, I will probably get Prime Video on the cycle for two to three months out of the year to catch up on originals that have released new episodes.  I don’t know that it is worth keeping it year-round if you don’t have Prime unless you find enough shows that are exclusive to Amazon that will justify tuning in on a regular basis (which possibly could include the Stargate entries before long).

Hulu is one of the oldest streaming services out there and it has gone through many changes since it kicked off way back in 2010.  It started as a joint venture between NBC Universal, Disney, and several other partners and originally offered past movies and series from those companies.  It would eventually work out streaming deals with several of the broadcast networks and cable channels to stream new episodes of current shows the day after broadcast (and it would keep them available for up to five weeks).  But with practically every network launching its own streaming service these days, there is much less of that and eventually Hulu will have mostly just Disney properties, as it is owned by the Mouse House, and acquisitions.

As far as sci fi TV originals, Hulu has less in that department than the most of the other big streamers, but it does have some big names among its scripted offerings.  The Handmaid’s Tale is truly a ground-breaking dystopian drama which has put out four seasons so far with a fifth on the way.  The fan-favorite series The Orville has shifted to Hulu after Disney bought Fox Entertainment and that one kicks off its third season this month.  And Futurama will be headed to the streaming service with new episodes later this year or early 2023.  Also, the AHS spin-off series American Horror Stories is streaming on the service.  Prior shows of note include Alex Garland’s Devs mini-series (highly recommended), the horror-movie-a-month anthology Into the Dark, and the short-lived but excellent sci fi anthology Dimension 404.

As far as past series, Hulu has a pretty large selection but not nearly as vast as when it started.  It once had many of the classics like Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, Babylon 5, Stargate: SG-1, and more.  But those have all gravitated to the streaming services linked to the studios that created the shows (or disappeared from streaming).  Still, there are plenty sci fi and fantasy selections on Hulu these days like Lost, The X-Files, Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lost in Space (the original), and more.  If you can’t find any sci fi TV you like on the service, then you are pretty picky.

But is it worth the monthly subscription fee you ask?  The plans start as low as $6.99 per month and that includes ads (which are not too intrusive).  For that amount, and with shows like The Handmaid’s Tale, The Orville, and Futurama hitting throughout the year, it has been worth it to me to keep it on the permanent list.  But with fewer past series available now, I might consider bumping it down to a few months a year at some point.  You can also get a streaming bundle which adds on Disney+ and ESPN+ for about fifteen bucks a month (that’s the plan I currently have).  And Hulu offers some live TV packages if you want to consider it as an option to cable.

For the most part, Hulu has some good originals and a decent selection of past shows (with some worthwhile movies in the mix as well).  But of the Big 3 streamers (Netflix, Prime Video, and Hulu), it has the least to offer at this point.  You can browse through Hulu’s television show selection at JustWatch.com to determine if the streamer has enough to interest you.  And you will definitely want to subscribe for a month or two to catch up on the current season of The Orville and upcoming seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale and more.

Apple TV+ is fairly new among the streaming services, and it does not have a ton of genre content at the moment, but what it does offer is certainly worth checking out.  Leading off its sci fi entries shortly after the service launched was the post-apocalyptic series See which stars Jason Momoa along with Ronald D. Moore’s alternate-history space-race show For All Mankind.  Both have received high marks through their first two seasons, and both are returning later this year for a third season.  M. Night Shyamalan’s supernatural drama Servent was another early offering, and that one has developed some good buzz as well.

Fall of 2021 brought a major sci fi entry with the adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation, and that one is set to return for a second season later this year.  And early this year the corporate dystopia Severance premiered to critical acclaim and it has been renewed for a second season.  Other genre entries of note include the alien-invasion series Invasion, the time-bending entry Shining Girls, and the mini-series The Essex Spirit.  New shows heading to the streamer include the adaptation of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis by Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, as well as a Time Bandits series and a live-action Godzilla series.  Encore runs of prior series are not part of the Apple TV+’s programming at the moment, but that could change if the streamer makes a deal with one of the major studios.

And so far, this streamer has not cancelled any of its shows.  Almost none have been around long enough to make it past the third season mark (where many streaming services cap off their originals), but since Apple TV+ has been supportive of its originals, I am guessing they will announce final seasons in advance rather that outright cancel shows (like it did for the fourth year of Servant).  The one show that did end after one season was the anthology reboot Amazing Stories, but that may have been a licensing issue.

This streamer will keep you busy with new episodes for at least two to three months out of the year.  I let my subscription lapse last Summer because it had a gap in new episodes being released, and I had several other shows I wanted to turn my attention to.  I am re-upping now and have quite a lot to look forward to including the first seasons of Foundation and Severance as well as the upcoming third season of For All Mankind.  At $4.99 per month, it is one of the least expensive streaming services out there, and as this one continues to add content it might be worth keeping on the permanent list if it remains at that price.

Tubi TV is a free streaming service that supports itself with advertising and it is very similar to Hulu when it first started all the way back in 2007.  The ads are not too intrusive with about one to three breaks per program depending on whether it is a thirty-minute show or a full hour.  Tubi has not ventured into original programming just yet, and hopefully it will stay that way because services seem to cut back on their catalog of past shows once they start spending on originals.  And unlike the pay services such as HBO Max, Paramount+, and Peacock, Tubi’s offerings do not appear to focus on a specific studio.

The service has quite a lot of sci fi and TV to offer, going as far back as some of the very early anthology shows like Lights Out and Tales of Tomorrow and also offering some more recent shows like Revolution and Almost Human.  It also has quite a number of one-season-wonder genre entries, some of which you can’t find anyplace else.  Among those are Man from Atlantis, the Logan’s Run TV series, the ’90s version of The Flash, the short-lived 1998 reboot of Fantasy Island (starring Malcolm McDowell as Mr. Roarke), Max Headroom, and more.  Tubi also has a pretty large selection of Anime, far too much to list out here.

Following is a highlight of the sci fi and fantasy shows available on the service, and you can find plenty more if you spend some time searching.  It also has quite a number of movies past and present to choose from.  Tubi is available on Roku, Apple TV, Amazon’s Fire Stick, and other streaming platforms and you can also watch on its website.

Disney+ got its start two and half years ago, launching in November 2019, and I have been a subscriber since the beginning.  It kicked off with the first season of The Mandalorian which drove quite a number of subscriptions to the service, but original content was rather sparse after that for about a year largely due to the pandemic-related production delays.  But once WandaVision arrived in January 2021, the streamer has been putting out original content of interest to genre fans on a regular basis.

Among the additional MCU shows so far there has been The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If?, Hawkeye, and Moon Knight (which is releasing new episodes now).  Upcoming from that franchise are Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, Echo, Secret Invasion, and more.  The Mandalorian launched the Star Wars spin-offs on the service and was followed by The Book of Boba Fett.  Also on the way are Rangers of the New Republic, Ahsoka, Andor, Lando, and more.  Also, the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars was one of the early originals available on Disney+, and the spin-off series The Bad Batch came out of that.  Beyond the MCU and Star Wars, the streamer is currently working on a Willow spin-off series, Nautilus (based on Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea), Percy Jackson & the Olympians, and more.  (You can see a list of upcoming originals at this link.)

Among prior series available for streaming, the Netflix MCU shows Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Punisher have all jumped over to Disney+ (including the team-up miniseries The Defenders).   And there is talk that Daredevil and maybe some of those other shows will be revived there.  Also available for streaming are Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter, Star Wars: The Clone Wars (including the Genndy Tartakovsky series), Once Upon a Time, Gargoyles (the animated series), many of the Marvel animated shows, and more.  Beyond that, there’s are not a whole lot of prior sci fi and fantasy shows streaming on the service, but enough to keep you busy.  And as far as movies, Disney+ has all the MCU films, all the Star Wars films, and a large selection from Disney’s back catalog (but why none of the original Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck cartoons?).  And if you have little ones, there are plenty of kids and family movies to keep them entertained.  This service is probably a must-have for families.

One of the things that this service has done which is quite smart is price itself on the lower end of the scale (a large part of the reason I have remained an active subscriber).  For eight bucks a month, you get everything it has available ad-free (though some movies might have an extra charge upon initial release like Black Widow).  They also offer a bundle for $14 which includes Hulu and ESPN+ (I upgraded to that option).  That gives you quite a lot of streaming and it’s cheaper than Netflix.  For me, this service has been worth keeping as an ongoing subscription, and I find myself tuning into it on a regular basis.  If you are going to put it on the churn, though, give yourself a couple months each year in order to binge all the original content (and don’t be surprised if you end up as a regular subscriber).

Paramount+ is still a relatively new streaming service and it is one that I have had on an annual rotation the last few years.  It is currently the go to location for the Star Trek franchise with four new shows active and more on the way.  It will also shortly be the only streamer that has the prior Star Trek TV shows as those have been disappearing from Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu over the past few months.

I typically re-up my subscription for about a two month period to catch shows of interest that have wrapped up their most current seasons.  I started off with Star Trek: Discovery (a show that I have remained disappointed with) and The Twilight Zone revival (which was actually quite good though sadly cancelled after only two seasons).  Last year I added Star Trek: Picard to the list and enjoyed that one even if it did get off to a rough start.  This year I will probably re-up in June so that I can start watching the new Captain Pike series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and catch up with Picard Season 2.  I’m also interested in checking out Halo The Series, and I never did watch any of Star Trek: Lower Decks.

Also of interest on Paramount+ is the procedural with supernatural leanings Evil.  The first season of that show (which aired on CBS before switching to a streaming exclusive) failed to grab me and I gave up after about four episodes.  But I have heard good things about it, especially its second season, so I will give it another look.  I may also check out the reboot of The Stand, but I have a hard time seeing how it can stand up to the ’90s version (more on that one at this link).  I will also probably give Star Trek: Prodigy a look.

Among the past TV shows currently available on Paramount+, the pickins’ are pretty slim.  There is not too much for sci fi fans beyond the older Trek entries, though you will find a few shows of interest like Jericho, Twin Peaks, and the original Twilight Zone.  As far as movies go, there is a decent selection from the Paramount back catalog, but it is by no means exhaustive.  All of the Trek films are available for streaming and there are some older sci fi classics like the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1953’s The War of the Worlds, and The Angry Red Planet.  You can see all of the television and movie selections for the service at JustWatch.com.

This service will be a must-have if you want to stream any or all of the Star Trek shows, but for me it is one that I pick up for a couple of months at a time to watch some of the newer stuff and maybe revisit some older shows and movies.  With plans starting at $4.99, Paramount+ is affordable, but you will need to review the lineup to determine if you will get your money’s worth by sticking with the service for more than a couple of months at a time.

Currently I have HBO Max for “free” because my cell phone service is through AT&T and they own HBO/HBO Max (and will probably own you and me soon). I can’t tell you that the cell phone service is great (pretty much the same with all of them), but I am loving HBO Max and it would probably be on my permanent list even if I had to pay for it (though it is one of the pricier services at $14.99 per month).

Since DC is under the At&T/Warner Bros. umbrella, HBO Max has plenty of offerings inspired by those comics, as you might expect.  The Suicide Squad spin-off series Peacemaker was on my must-watch list and I caught each episode of that as they rolled out on a weekly basis. That one was a ton of fun and I am looking forward to the second season when it finally arrives (I discuss the show in more detail at this link). And when I finished watching the first season of that, I found that Doom Patrol perfectly filled the void. It has a similar snarky sense of humor and also offers a deconstruction of the superhero genre and I have three seasons of that one to keep me busy (with a fourth on the way).

For more superhero fun (and a more straightforward entry in that genre), there is the animated series Young Justice. It focuses on the younger heroes, most of whom are former sidekicks, like Nightwing, Robin, Wonder Girl, Aqualad, and more. And while it does have appeal to a younger audience, it brings some surprisingly mature themes into its storylines, and some pretty good sci fi elements. And since it is an animated series, it can bring in any DC character, so it delivers a rather comprehensive collection of heroes. That one is currently in its fourth season and I resumed watching with its second year (I saw the first season back when it was on Cartoon Network).

The first season of The CW’s Superman & Lois is streaming on HBO Max, and I decided to give that one a look as it has received good reviews. I have enjoyed it more than expected (I had grown tired with most of the other Arrow-verse entries) and plan on finishing out the season. I will also check out the live-action DC series Titans as time allows, but I have enough superhero shows on my watch list to keep me busy for a while.

The sci fi entry Raised by Wolves is one that I have had on my list of shows to check out, and I finally got around to watching it. After finishing the first season, I can’t tell you that I love the show, in fact it ended on a very bizarre note. But I do plan on checking out the second season at some point. The second half of the first season of The Nevers is allegedly on the way in the next month or so, and that is one that I am eagerly awaiting as I really enjoyed what I have seen from that one so far.

Among past shows that are available, all of the prior seasons of Rick & Morty are streaming on the service. That is one that I never got into previously, but I am starting to discover why that delightfully insane show has received the rep it has. The critically acclaimed The Leftovers is available and I plan on revisiting that one (I previously caught a few episodes of the first season). And I never got around to watching the final season of the animated fantasy Samurai Jack, so that is one I will get on the list as well.

HBO Max is also the home of the remastered version of Babylon 5. If you have never seen this sci fi classic, I highly recommend it. And if you haven’t seen it in a while, I suggest a rewatch (more on that show at this link). Another gem from the past available here is the supernatural drama Carnivale which is a must-watch genre entry (more on that one at this link). And high-profile HBO shows like Game of Thrones, Watchmen, and Lovecraft Country are available for streaming as well. And if you are looking for some off-the-wall fun, I suggest checking out the absurdly fun animated series Courage the Cowardly Dog.

Of course, there are plenty of movies available including new releases like Dune, The Suicide Squad, Free Guy, and Nightmare Alley along with many of the DCEU movies and a large selection from the Warner Bros. back catalog. And for DC fans, most of the direct-to-video animated films are available which in my opinion are often superior to the DCEU live-action movies.  You can see all of the television and movie selections for the service at JustWatch.com.

HBO Max costs $14.99 per month (or $149.99 per year), though a cheaper plan is available for $9.99 per month ($99.99 per year) which includes ads and a few less features. If you subscribe to HBO through your cable or satellite provider, then you automatically have access to the ad-free plan. Even though HBO Max is one of the higher cost streamers, I consider it worth the money because it has plenty for sci fi fans and quite a large amount of non-genre content beyond that.  I do find the interface to be somewhat clunky, but that is just a minor nuisance.  And if you sign up for this service, you will quickly find yourself filling up your watch-list with plenty of sci fi and fantasy entries.
