Sci Fi TV Week in Review: Johnny Jay’s irreverent, snarky, and caffeine-fueled look back at the past week in sci fi TV in five minutes or less.
San Diego Comic-Con has been in session the last few days and quite a lot a sci fi TV news has been coming out of that, so buckle in as I give the rundown.
Fans of The Walking Dead have been waiting a long (long) time for the promised Rick Grimes movies that cover what happened to him after he was carried off in a helicopter in Season 9 (four years ago!) and Michonne went searching to find him. Well, we found at Comic-Con that those movies are not going to happen anymore, and instead we will be getting a six-episode mini-series. Deadline gives the following rundown for the series:
The TWD spinoff will present an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?
It is currently set to premiere at some point in 2023.
Several renewal announcements were made the last few days, starting off with Syfy’s Resident Alien which will be continuing for a third season. That show will be resuming new episodes for its second season next month, and the third season should arrive at some point in 2023.
Also, Amazon’s epic fantasy series The Wheel of Time will carry on to a third season. The first year was released in November 2021 with the second season set to arrive later this year or early 2023. The third season will be based on the fourth book in the Robert Jordan book series The Shadow Rising.
Disney+ has given an early third season renewal to its animated, alternate-universe MCU series What It . . . ? The first season of that one started streaming in Summer 2021 with the second season set for early 2023.
Finally, Apple TV+ officially announced a fourth season of its alternate-history space race series For All Mankind. That had been pretty much expected and since it is one of the streamer’s most popular originals and Production Weekly had already listed the fourth season as being in progress. It is currently streaming its third season with the fourth set for 2023.
In casting news, former Buffy the Vampire Slayer lead Sarah Michelle Geller is set to star in the upcoming Teen Wolf “offshoot” series Wolf Pack. She will also be one of the executive producers of the show. And Zach Galligan will be returning to the Gremlins franchise as he has been added to the voice cast of the upcoming HBO Max animated series Gremlins: The Secrets of the Mogwai. (Please remind him not to feed those guys after midnight.)
In schedule announcements, The Walking Dead will be returning for its final eight episodes on AMC on October 2nd. And the new series Salvage Marines, which stars Casper Van Dien, will premiere next week on Crackle and PopcornFilx on July 28th. Also arriving next week are Harley Quinn Season 3 on HBO Max on July 28th and Paper Girls on Prime Video on July 29th. You can see all the premieres for August and beyond at this link plus you can see the Weekly Listings here.
In trailers, quite a number have been coming out of SDCC so far including House of the Dragon, Tales of the Walking Dead, Teen Wolf: The Movie, Salvage Marines, and more. You can see all those at this link.
