Disney+ has given a straight-to-series order to Percy Jackson and the Olympians which is based on the fantasy book series by Rick Riordan. The Hollywood Reporter gives the following description for the series:
The Percy Jackson series follows a 12-year-old boy who learns that he is a demigod. He’s just coming to terms with his newfound supernatural powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. Now Percy must trek across America to find it and restore order to Olympus.
The films based on the books fell short of expectations in Box Office receipts and were met with a mixed reception from critics and fans. Riordan had expressed disappointment with the films, but he will be more closely involved with the series. He will be writing the pilot with Jon Steinberg (Black Sails) and will be onboard as executive producer. Disney’s 20th Television (formerly 20th Century Fox Television) will be producing the series. The cast has not been announced yet, and it could be 2023 before it premieres on the streaming service.
