Apple TV+ has given a straight-to-series order for a televsion reboot of the classic 1927 film Metropolis with Mr. Robot‘s Sam Esmail helming the project. Deadline gives the following summary of the original film:
Metropolis was directed by Lang and written by Thea Von Harbou based on the latter’s 1925 novel. It is set in a futuristic urban dystopia and follows the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city master, and Maria, a saintly figure to the workers, to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes in their city and bring the workers together with Joh Fredersen, the city master.
Esmail will write and direct the series that he began developing this back in 2016, and this will be part of his overall deal with UCP. He is also currently working on a Battlestar: Galactica series for Peacock (more on that at this link), but there has not been much in the way of updates on that one. Metropolis will likely be targeting an early 2023 debut.
