Sci Fi TV Week in Review: Obi-Wan Kenobi May Get a Second Season (or It May Not), Venture Bros. Movie Is Moving Forward, and More

Sci Fi TV Week in Review: Johnny Jay’s irreverent, snarky, and caffeine-fueled look back at the past week in sci fi TV in five minutes or less.

Obi-Wan Kenobi wrapped its first season this week and maybe there will be a second season and maybe there won’t.  Actor Ewan McGreggor has said that “I really hope we do another” (probably because acting jobs have been sparse for him of late) and Hayden Christensen also commented that “I would love to continue with this character” (ditto on the acting jobs).   But series director Deborah Chow was less committal saying “I think, you know, if it was to go forward, it would only be if there was a real reason for another one”.  Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy noted that the intention was to do a limited series, but if there is “huge engagement” from the audience they might consider a second season.  So from all of this we can surmise that . . . maybe there will be a second season and maybe there won’t.

Creator of the 2011 Teen Wolf television series Jeff Davis has another show in the works that focuses on lycanthropes.  Wolf Pack is in development at MTV based on the book series by Edo Van Belkom. It will follow several young people “whose lives are forever changed when a California wildfire awakens a terrifying supernatural creature”, and it has set its four leads.  I have seen this referred to by some sources as a Teen Wolf spin-off, but the book series was not linked to that show.  In any case, it will have pretty, young people who turn into werewolves.

The Venture Bros. movie is still moving forward and Patrick Warburton has indicated that he has recorded his dialog for the animated film.  That show was initially renewed for an eighth season, but in 2020 it was announced that the fan-favorite cartoon was cancelled and would not continue past its seventh year.  The creators decided to do a movie to wrap up the series and that is expected to arrive later this year or early 2023.

In ratings news, not many people tuned in for the third season premiere of Freeform’s Motherland Fort Salem as that one only managed a 0.04 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with a paltry 87K total viewers.  The viewership for most scripted programming on the linear networks continues to erode and you have to wonder how much longer these old-school programmers will remain viable. In schedule announcements, Hulu’s Solar Opposities will be returning for its third season July 13th, and CBS has set the second season premiere for Ghosts as September 29th.  Next week, the sci fi series Moonhaven will have its premiere on AMC+.  And both Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and The Boys will be wrapping up their current seasons.  We are almost into July and you can see all the premieres for that month and beyond at this link plus you can see the Weekly Listings here.

Trailers released this week include Solar Opposites Season 3, What We Do in the Shadows Season 4, and Stranger Things Season 4 Vol. 2 and you can see those at this link.

Did I miss anything? Probably because I am traveling right now and I am running behind on the news, so let me know in the comments below.
