Sci Fi TV Week in Review: Resident Alien Gets Trimmed Back for 3rd Season, Deborah Ann Woll Has Not Been Invited Back to Daredevil, and More

Sci Fi TV Week in Review: Johnny Jay’s irreverent, snarky, and caffeine-fueled look back at the past week in sci fi TV in five minutes or less.

It was a pretty slow week for sci fi TV news, and I expect things to be even slower through the Thanksgiving holidays, so this column may take a week off unless some big stories hit.

The third season of Resident Alien–which stars Alan Tudyk–will not have its debut until some point in 2023, but Syfy has already cut back the episode order for that.  It was originally set for twelve eps but has been cut back to eight.  That is definitely not a good sign, especially considering that the show’s ratings dropped notably in the second half of its second season.  I would not be surprised if the network ends up announcing the upcoming third season as the show’s last at some point.  Watch for more on this in an upcoming post on CancelledSciFi.com.

In casting news, Timothy Omundson (Supernatural) and Jay Duplass have been cast in the upcoming Percy Jackson & the Olympians television series in the roles of gods.  The former will be playing Hephaestus and the latter has been cast as Hades.  That show is targeting a 2023 premiere.

In non-casting news, Disney+ is moving forward with a new Daredevil series which may or may not be a reboot, and unfortunately it looks like they are trying to limit ties to the show that aired for three seasons on Netflix. Charlie Cox will return as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio will be back as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin.  But Deborah Ann Woll has indicated that she has not been asked back to the show yet, and I have also heard nothing about Elden Henson reprising his role as Foggy Nelsen.  If they do the show as a complete reboot, that would certainly be a disservice to the previous entry which is often considered one of the best superhero series of all time.  But Disney is the mega-corp and they know what’s best for us, right?

In ratings news, no one is watching either the vampire series Let the Right One In on Showtime or the sci fi comedy Avenue 5 on HBO.  The latter show scored a 0.00 rating with its latest episode (probably somewhere around a 0.004 if you expand the decimal place), while the vampire series only managed a 0.02 score.  Both had under 100K total viewers last week and I am expecting both to get sent to the Network Executioner once they have wrapped up their current seasons.  More on the streaming and linear ratings for sci fi TV shows at CancelledSciFi.com.

In premieres next week, Netflix’s Addams Family reboot Wednesday will have its premiere on . . . you guessed it . . . Wednesday.  All episodes will be available for viewing that day.  FOX’s animated fantasy comedy Krapopolis was supposed to have a special preview episode next week, but apparently that idea was flushed down the krapper and the show will arrive at some point in January.  You can see all the premieres for November and beyond at this link and you can see the Weekly Listings here.
