Sci Fi TV Week in Review: Johnny Jay’s irreverent, snarky, and caffeine-fueled look back at the past week in sci fi TV in five minutes or less.
It was another week without much in the way of sci fi TV news, but Thursday was Star Trek Day 2022 and it brought announcements for several of the Parmount+ Trek shows. The upcoming third season of Star Trek: Picard has been confirmed as its last and it will premiere on February 18, 2023. Much of the TNG crew will be returning for that one and a brief teaser was released for the show. Carol Kane (Gotham) will be joining the cast of Strange New Worlds and a clip for that was released as well. Star Trek: Prodigy will resume its first season on October 27th and a first-look clip for that was released for that show. You can see all of the trailers at this link and you can read more about Star Trek Day at this link.
Hulu has given its dystopian drama The Handmaid’s Tale another year to tell its story as the show has been renewed for a sixth season. That will be its last, but apparently the streamer wanted to get one more year out of one of its flagship originals. The story won’t end there, though, as the sequel series The Testaments will be queued after the sixth season wraps and that will likely arrive at some point in 2024.
The delivery route for Paper Girls will be ending as Amazon has cancelled that time-bending series after one season. It did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Top 10, but it was not helped much considering it did not get much in the way of promotion from the streamer. Legendary TV will be shopping it around to other venues
In the streaming ratings, Netflix’s The Sandman took the Number 1 spot in the Nielsen Top 10 for originals in its second week of release. It pulled in an estimated 1.4 billion minutes of viewing but it is uncertain if that is good enough for that streamer to give it a second season because it put a lot of money in the series. Over on HBO, House of the Dragon slipped some in the ratings in its third week as the curious onlooker effect starts to take its toll. A lot of people tuned in early, but interest appears to be waning by the third episode. But with a 0.37 rating and 1.8 million viewers based on the same-day numbers, the show is still doing well and has already been renewed for a second season. Next week brings the premiere of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 on Hulu on Wednesday along with several other shows hitting the schedule. On Monday, War of the Worlds returns for its third season on EPIX. On Thursday, Vampire Academy kicks off on Peacock, And on Friday, all episodes of Fate: The Winx Saga will be available for streaming on Netflix. You can see all the premieres for September and beyond at this link plus you can see the Weekly Listings here.
