Sci Fi TV Week in Review: Johnny Jay’s irreverent, snarky, and caffeine-fueled look back at the past week in sci fi TV in five minutes or less.
It was a pretty slow week as far as sci fi TV news, but at least we got some word on what is going on at HBO Max concerning its superhero shows. Last week I reported shakeups at that streamer, but those do not appear to have impacted too many of the superhero entries at this point. According to a report from TVLine, the live-action Green Lantern TV series is still moving forward. That show “will reinvent the classic DC property through a story spanning decades and galaxies”, and Jeremy Irvine and Finn Wintrock are currently cast in the leading roles.
Harley Quinn is currently streaming its third season on HBO Max, and TVLine claims that a fourth season of that one is looking good at this point. Both Titans and Doom Patrol are moving forward with their previously announced fourth seasons, but there is no word on whether they will continue beyond that. Peacemaker remains safe for now and the upcoming third season of Pennyworth has been renamed to Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler. (Yeah, pretty much nobody likes that title.) The Penguin spin-off from the recent The Batman movie is still moving forward as is the Justice League Dark series and the Madame X and Constantine shows that will be linked to that. (Cast Matt Ryan as Constantine!) The only confirmed cancellation of a development project at this point is Kevin Smith’s Strange Adventures series.
In other development news, IDW Entertainment has worked out a deal for television adaptations of several of its properties including Dark Spaces: Wildfire, Rivers, and Brutal Nature. Each of these will be in development at different studios and networks have not been announced yet. Now if only IDW could work out a fifth season of Wynonna Earp . . .
Netflix has given its animated anthology series Love Death + Robots a fourth season renewal, and that will premiere at some point in 2023. That show has not been one of the streamer’s most-watched originals, but it has received plenty of good buzz and apparently is not expensive to produce.
In casting news, the upcoming eleventh season of American Horror Story will see the return of several fan-favorites. Zachary Quinto will be returning to the show, making his first appearance since Season 2 (Asylum) when he played Dr. Oliver Thredson. Also returning to the series will be Billie Lourd, Isaac Powell, and Patti Lupone.
In ratings news, the Disney+ MCU entry Ms. Marvel returned to the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 as it placed at Number 7 with an estimated 295 million minutes viewed for the second to last week of its run. That one could be on track for a second season renewal. More on the streaming and linear ratings for sci fi TV shows at CancelledSciFi.com.
Next week brings the premiere of the highly-anticipated Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon on HBO. Many GoT fans claim they will not tune in because they are still mad about how the main series ended. But good money says they will certainly end up watching it. Also premiering next week is She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (Disney+) and The Undeclared War (Peacock). You can see all the premieres for August and beyond at this link plus you can see the Weekly Listings here.
Did I miss anything? Probably because I am trying to cram in as much new Star Trek as possible so I don’t have to re-up Paramount+ for another month (don’t think its going to work, though), so let me know in the comments below.
