Reboots for Goosebumps and Early Edition Are in the Works

Disney+ has given the greenlight to a live-action reboot of the teen horror/comedy Goosebumps. Deadline gives the following description for the project:

Goosebumps combines teen comedy with horror, action-adventure, mystery and psychological thrill. The series follows a group of five high schoolers who unleash supernatural forces upon their town and must all work together — thanks to and in spite of their friendships, rivalries and pasts with each other — in order to save it, learning much about their own parents’ teenage secrets in the process.

Sony Pictures TV will produce the series with Nick Stoller (The Muppets) and Rob Letterman (Monster vs. Aliens) onboard as writers and executive producers. Based on the book series by R.L. Stine, Goosebumps previously aired as a TV series on FOX Kids in the ’90s and it had a big screen reboot in 2015 that was directed by Letterman. This one will likely be looking at a late 2022 or early 2023 release.

CBS has ordered a pilot for a reboot of the ’90s series Early Edition. Variety gives the following description of the project:

An ambitious but uncompromising journalist starts receiving tomorrow’s newspaper today. She then finds herself in the complicated business of changing the news instead of reporting it.

Franklin Entertainment will produce the series with Melissa Glenn (Beauty and the Beast) onboard as writer and executive producer. The original series starred Kyle Chandler, Shanesia Davis-Williams, and Fisher Stevens and ran for four seasons on CBS from 1996 to 2000. There have been no cast announcements for the reboot yet and CBS will be considering it for its Fall 022 slate.

Apple TV+ has given a series order to the dark sci fi comedy Sunny which will star Rashida Jones. Variety gives the following description:

The 10-episode series is based on the book Dark Manual by Colin O’Sullivan. In the half-hour show, Jones stars as Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, whose life is upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As “consolation” she’s given Sunny, one of a new class of domestic robots made by her husband’s electronics company. Though at first Suzie resents Sunny’s attempts to fill the void in her life, gradually they develop an unexpected friendship, as together they uncover the dark truth of what really happened to Suzie’s family, becoming dangerously enmeshed in a world Suzie never knew existed.

The series will be produced by A24 with Jones as executive producer. It will likely target a late 2022 debut.
