Sci Fi TV Development: Amazon Orders 2 Seasons of The Hospital, Live-Action Speed Racer Headed to Apple TV+

Amazon has given a two-season order for the sci fi animated comedy The Hospital which will have Maya Rudolph and Natasha Lyonne attached as executive producers.  The Hollywood Reporter gives the following description of the project:

The series follows Sleech and Klak — aliens, best friends and intergalactically renowned surgeons — as they tackle anxiety-eating parasites, illegal time loops and deep-space STIs. Risking their careers to take on a remarkable case, they put existence itself in jeopardy. Although considering their dismal personal lives, oblivion might be an improvement.

The voice cast will include Keke Palmer, Greta Lee, Kieran Culkin, Sam Smith with Rudolph and Lyonne also voicing characters on the show. It was created by Cirocco Dunlap (Russian Doll) who will also act as showrunner. Development began back in 2020 and Amazon has now given the greenlight for the series to move forward.

A live-action Speed Racer series is in the works at Apple TV+ and will come from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot productions.  Following the adventures of a young racecar driver with a high-tech car, it will be based on the manga and Anime from the 1960s.  Hiram Martinez (Snowpiercer) and Ron Fitzgerald (Westworld) will be onboard as the writers, and the early word is that the show will draw more heavily from the original manga.  The series will not be linked to the poorly-received 2008 live-action movie based on the franchise that came from the Wachowskis.

Netflix is working on a television adaptation of the PlayStation action-adventure video game Horizon Zero Dawn from Guerilla Games.  Deadline gives the following description of the game:

The inaugural Horizon game is set in a post-apocalyptic United States inhabited by robotic creatures, known as Machines, of various size and scale. Horizon Zero Dawn centers on an ambitious and clever, but outcast hunter named Aloy who seeks to uncover the past.

This is very early in the development phase with no creative talent or cast attached at this time.  Expect the streamer to target a 2023 premiere for the show.
