Sci Fi TV Development: The Duffer Bros Are Working on a Live-Action Death Note and More

The Duffer Bros. have had plenty of success on Netflix with Stranger Things, and now they have committed further to the streamer with several projects in the works from their newly formed Upside Down Pictures.  First on the list is a live-action adaptation of the Anime Death NoteDeadline gives the following description of the story:

The original focuses on a bright teenager who discovers a mysterious black notebook that gives him supernatural power over life and death, the latter caused by writing a person’s name in the book. The teen becomes intoxicated with power as he decides to cleanse the world of undesirables, as a law enforcement team tries to stop him.

Netflix previously did a movie based on the Anime in 2017, but the series from the Duffer Bros. will not be linked to that.

Next up will be an adaptation of the 1984 novel Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub.  Deadline gives the following rundown:

The Talisman tells the story of a young man who moves between New Hampshire and an alternate world called ‘The Territories’ to obtain an artifact that will save his mother’s life.

They will be working with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and Paramount Television on the project.  And in addition to that, the Duffer Bros. are working on an original series from Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews who developed Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.  No details are available on that at this point.  All of these projects are early in the development stage and it could be at least a year or more before they make it to the small screen.

Not moving forward is the adaptation of the Green Bone Saga fantasy novels by Fonda J. Lee which was in the works at Peacock.  That had been in development for a while, but the streamer decided to bow out from the production.  Peacock also recently cancelled plans for the Field of Dreams reboot/sequel series from Michael Schur (The Good Place).  The Green Bone Saga will be shopped around to other venues.
