Sci Fi TV Week in Review: Black Mirror S6 Announces Cast, Orphan Black: Echoes to Start Filming, and More

Sci Fi TV Week in Review: Johnny Jay’s irreverent, snarky, and caffeine-fueled look back at the past week in sci fi TV in five minutes or less.

There was not a lot of sci fi TV news this past week, likely because the big stuff is being held for San Diego Comic Con which kicks off on Wednesday.  But there were still a few stories of note.

Black Mirror Season 6 announced several of its guest stars leading off with Breaking Bad and Westworld alum Aaron Paul.  Also on the cast list are Josh Hartnett (Penny Dreadful), Kate Mara (Fantastic Four), Danny Ramirez (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), Paapa Essiedu, Clara Rugaard, Auden Thornton, and Anjana Vasan.  The sixth season should hit Netflix at some point in 2023.

The Orphan Black sequel series Echoes is set to begin filming in August.  Not much information is available about that show, but it appears that it will follow a new set of clones based on what the logline tells us:

The new series is set in the near future and takes a deep dive into the exploration of the scientific manipulation of human existence. It follows a group of women as they weave their way into each other’s lives and embark on a journey, unravelling the mystery of their identity and uncovering a story of love and betrayal.

The ten-episode first season of that show should premiere on BBC America in the first half of 2023.

And speaking of spin-offs, the upcoming new entry in The Boys franchise has received a title.  That one will be called Gen V, and following is the logline for the show:

Gen V is an irreverent, R-rated series that explores the lives of hormonal, competitive Supes as they put their physical, sexual and moral boundaries to the test, competing for the best contracts in the best cities. It’s part college show, part Hunger Games — with all the heart, satire, and raunch of The Boys.

The show will star Jaz Sinclair, Shelley Conn, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Derek Luh, Asa Germann, Patrick Schwarzenegger (yes, the son of that Schwarzenegger), Sean Patrick Thomas, and Marco Pigossi and could premiere by the end of 2022.

In ratings news, people are still watching Stranger Things, lots of people.  That show continues to dominate the charts it appears on as it tallies up millions of hours of viewing for all four of its seasons.  But not so many people are watching The Orville on Hulu.  That show has been releasing its third season episodes on a weekly basis, but it has yet to make it into the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 for originals.  There have been rumors that the show’s third season will be its last, and without strong viewership numbers that may prove to be true.  More on the streaming and linear ratings for sci fi TV shows at CancelledSciFi.com.

In schedule announcements, quite a number of shows received premiere dates this last week.  The second season of Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal finally arrives next week on Adult Swim on July 21st.  The third season of Star Trek: Lower Decks will premiere on August 25th on Paramount+.  The second season of Syfy’s Chucky along with the first season of its new dramedy Reginald the Vampire will both premiere on October 5th.  You can see all the premieres for July and beyond at this link plus you can see the Weekly Listings here.

There were also quite a lot of trailers released this week including The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5, Primal Season 2, and Harley Quinn Season 3.  You can see those at this link.

Did I miss anything? Probably because I have been cramming in a bunch of shows to try and get caught up, so let me know in the comments below.
