Sci Fi TV Week in Review: A Game of Thrones Spin-Off with Jon Snow Is in the Works, Snowpiercer Will End With Fourth Season, and More

Sci Fi TV Week in Review: Johnny Jay’s irreverent, snarky, and caffeine-fueled look back at the past week in sci fi TV in five minutes or less.

HBO is not done with Jon Snow yet.  Or should I say Aegon Targayen?  Whoever he is, another Game of Thrones spin-off/sequel/prequel is in the works (is this fifty now?) which will focus on the character who was last seen heading off to live with the Wildlings.  The show is in the early stages of development with no details available at this time, but Kit Harington is expected to return in the role.  How about before they do that they put together an expanded eighth season that fills in some missing pieces to give a more satisfying ending to the parent show?

TNT’s Snowpiercer is coming to the end of the line (requisite train-related pun) as the post-apocalyptic drama will be ending with its upcoming fourth season.  That news comes as no surprise seeing as how TNT and TBS (both owned by Warner Bros. Discovery) have decided to exit from the scripted programming business.  The announcement should at least give the creative team the opportunity to wrap up the show’s storylines.

In development news, Amazon is working on an adaptation of the missing plane drama Last Know Position which is based on the podcast of the same name.  That one is not to be confused with the other current missing plane drama Manifest which was cancelled by NBC then picked up by Netflix for a final season.  It is also not to be confused with the prior missing plane drama Lost or the even older missing plane drama The New People from 1969.  Also in development is a Wonder Man series at Disney+ and three Avatar the Last Airbender animated movies from Paramount+/Nickelodeon.

The former Doctor Horrible will be joining Doctor Who to play one of the most horrible villains that the Doctor has ever faced, but it won’t be Doctor Horrible.  Neil Patrick Harris has signed on with the series to appear in the upcoming 60th Anniversary special and he released the picture above on Instagram with the following statement: “Thank you for inviting me into your Whoniverse, @russelltdavies63 . I’ll try my hardest to do my worst. This Doctor has no idea what’s in store. And even if he does… Who cares? Ha ha ha HA ha-ha-ha!”

In ratings news, The CW’s new entry Tom Swift saw its numbers slip this past week to a 0.05 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 292K total viewers.  Those might be okay for a Summer show during a normal year, but the network is in the process of getting sold and has been clearing the schedule of underperformers.  I already had that one On the Bubble, and considering the fact that it will lose its Superman & Lois lead-in soon, I expect the numbers to drop further.  More on the streaming and linear ratings for sci fi TV shows at CancelledSciFi.com.

Next week brings several premieres including the return of HBO’s Westworld for its fourth season (June 26th) and Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy for its 3rd year (June 24th).  Also next week, Freeform’s Motherland Fort Salem is back for its third and final season on Tuesday, and Wellington Paranormal resumes its encore run on The CW on Wednesday.  We are almost into July and you can see all the premieres for that month and beyond at this link plus you can see the Weekly Listings here.

Only one trailer was released this past week that I am aware, but it is a notable one as HBO has finally given us a better look at the upcoming fourth season of Westworld. You can see the trailer at this link.

Did I miss anything? Probably because of the furnace that is Texas weather right now and my brain is melting, so let me know in the comments below.
